How the calculator works
Into the wind, add 1% of the distance for every mph of headwind. Downwind, take off 0.5% per mph: a tailwind helps about half as much as a headwind hurts. With a quartering wind, only the part blowing along the shot line changes the yardage.
It’s Golf Monthly’s rule of thumb, and Trackman’s data shows the same headwind and tailwind difference. It’s an estimate for full shots, not a ball-flight simulation. Spin, launch, temperature, altitude and the wind higher up all change the real number.
What about crosswinds?
A wind straight across doesn’t change the yardage in this rule, but it moves the ball. Aim into it: with the wind from the right, aim right and let it bring the ball back. A shot curving with the wind travels farther than one curving against it.
Measure the wind where you stand
Guessing the wind is the hard part. Wind Caddie is a wind meter I’m building for my golf bag. It measures the wind and does this sum on my iPhone. Measuring wind isn’t allowed in competition, so it’s for practice and casual rounds.
